Swimming
At Gorsewood, we are committed to ensuring that all children develop the skills and confidence needed to be safe and successful in the water. In line with the National Curriculum for Physical Education, all pupils in Key Stage 2 access swimming lessons and continue to receive instruction until they can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes effectively, and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
Our swimming lessons take place at Brookvale Recreation Centre, which pupils walk to as part of the school day. Lessons are delivered by qualified swimming instructors who provide high-quality teaching and support. As well as developing swimming techniques such as front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke, pupils learn essential water safety skills and self-rescue techniques that help them stay safe in and around water.
Swimming and water safety form an important part of our PE curriculum and contribute to pupils' physical development, personal safety and wellbeing. By providing regular opportunities to learn and practise these skills, we support pupils in meeting the expectations of the National Curriculum and promote the confidence, resilience and healthy lifestyles valued through the wider school curriculum and recognised within high-quality personal development provision
