New spellings will go home on a Monday and will be tested the following Monday.

Home Reading

Reading is important and is a skill that can open up opportunities across the curriculum and enable you to find out about the world. Reading is a priority at our school and we want our children and families to foster a love of reading.

We will be completing lots of reading tasks in school but reading at home can support you and is something you can do to help you make excellent progress across the curriculum.

All children will need a home reading book and reading at home will be recorded in their journal. We do expect that children will read at least 3 times every week ask parents to sign the journals.  House points and Be Your Best Self tickets will be given to children who are reading and returning their journal daily. If you read 5 times a week for a whole half term then you will be invited to our 'Starbooks Cafe'.

Homework: Set on Friday and due back in on the following Friday.

Homework helps children by recapping learning that has taken place in the classroom. It is important that homework is completed every week. Homework will be set on Google Classroom. Please request paper copies from Mrs. Durbin if children work better this way.

Times Tables Check

TTRS is going to be a large focus for Year 4 this year due to the times tables check in Summer term and we will have weekly competitions for the best scores, most improved and others. Use this link to access TTRS: https://play.ttrockstars.com/

Our Learning Journey:

This year promises to be a busy and exciting one, with so many opportunities for the children to develop their skills, knowledge, and confidence across the curriculum.

We will be following multiple English units from Literacy Tree. We have lots of exciting books that we will be covering to help us practice our English curriculum objectives including:

Change Sings by Amanda Gorman
The Iron Man by Ted Hughes
Until I met Dudley by Roger McGough
Flooded by Mariajo Illustrajo
The Ever-Changing Earth by Grahame Baker-Smith
Weslandia by Paul Fleischman
Riddle of the Runes by Janina Ramirez
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis

We shall also be working on our spellings and part of our focus shall be on recapping the Year1/2 common exception words and continuing to learn the Year 3/4 staturatory spelling Words. You can follow the links under the Useful Websites section of this page to make sure you can spell the words on both lists. It is important that we try our best to spell as many of these words as we can.

As mathematicians we will follow the mastery approach of the Maths No Problem! scheme of work to master our knowledge of place value before applying this to formal methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as well as exploring Roman numerals, graphs, fractions, time, money decimals, length, mass and volume, area and perimeter of figures, geometry and finally position and movement. In addition to our daily maths lessons we will do mastering number each day which will help us to develop our multiplication skills along with our fluency lessons to secure our understanding of the things we have been learning and revisit throughout the year.

As geographers, we will be exploring The UK, learning all about mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes, and then venturing further into Europe.

As historians, we’ll be stepping back in time to discover The Romans, the changing powers of the monarchy, and life with the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.

As design and technology technicians, the children will enjoy hands-on projects including baking biscuits, making torches, and sewing book sleeves.

As artists, we will be exploring textures, tone and proportion, experimenting with sculpture and 3D art, and creating our own power prints.

As scienctists will be full of discovery! We’ll be delving into the fascinating worlds of sound, electricity and states of matter, as well as habitats, conservation of living things, and even identifying teeth in humans.

As computer scientists, we’ll be developing both practical and creative skills: learning how to stay safe online, using Crumble kits and Micro:Bits, creating animations on Scratch, designing websites, and producing media such as audio projects.

While as linguists, the children will be building vocabulary on topics in French such as Christmas, towns, weather and climate, hobbies, the body and skeleton, and places in the world.

We  will have two PE sessions each week on a Tuesday and Friday. On a Tuesday you will be getting active inside and on a Friday our lessons will be outside.  Please make sure you come to school in your PE kits on Tuesday and Friday and that you follow the school's uniform policy for kits. We will also be swimming later in the year but details will follow.

Please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Durbin with any queries or concerns by popping into the office between 8.30am and 8.40am or ask Miss Jackson for a call back.
