Mathematics- Every Child a Mathematician

Purpose of study from the National Curriculum

Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Intent

Our Mathematics curriculum is designed to provide every pupil with the opportunity to develop a comprehensive knowledge of all areas in the Primary Mathematics National Curriculum through high-quality, carefully sequenced, mastery lessons. We intend to provide pupils with an ambitious curriculum that enables them to make good progress, feel challenged and successful and have an awareness of how relevant Mathematics is within the world around them. Mathematics at Goreswood Primary School ensures that children become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics; are able to reason mathematically and can solve problems by applying their Mathematical skill and knowledge.

Implementation

At Gorsewood Primary School, we use the Maths No Problem scheme of work to teach for mastery. When taught to master maths, children develop their fluency to solve more complex problems. This scheme, alongside other high-quality resources, help us to implement our Mathematics curriculum. Our carefully planned approach has been designed to be progressive and allows children to revisit previous learning. This helps them to build knowledge and skills over time and form connections through fluency. Our mastery curriculum ensures that our children have a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Through the carefully sequences lessons teachers ensure that skills are practised through fluency, concepts are challenged through reasoning and Mathematical knowledge and skill is embedded through problem solving. Children in EYFS, Year 1, Year 4 and Year 5 follow the mastering number programme. This is a daily number session that develops a range of skills and concepts.

Impact

Our aim is for all children to be successful and have excellent outcomes in Mathematics. We aim for all pupils to become independent mathematicians who have developed skills that can be applied when needed in their adult life. Our mastery curriculum will ensure that children are fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics; they will be able to reason mathematically and explain their thoughts confidently using the key vocabulary; pupils will be problem solvers who are able to apply their knowledge and skills to a range of situations and across the curriculum. By having these skills, children will be resilient Mathematicians and have a confident and positive attitude towards Mathematics.

Multiplication Facts: Multiplication and recall of key facts is essential to all areas of maths. Year 4 will have a multiplication check test in the Summer Term. Children in Year 2 - 6 can use ttrs to support their learning. Children in EYFS and Year 1 all have access to numbots and can access this at home too.
