Reading
Reading is extremely important and at Gorsewood, we want all of our children to become fluent, confident readers.
We expect all children to read at home to an adult at least 3 times a week.
Children are given lots of opportunities to read whilst in school and staff support and encourage them to develop a love of reading. Novels, stories, poems and a range of texts are shared with children so they can enjoy listening to stories and want to read more themselves. All classrooms have exciting reading areas and a wide range of books which appeal to lots of interests and characters. Children are given time to simply read for pleasure throughout the day and in lots of places too. Our Year 5 and Year 6 buddies also spend time reading with our younger children too.
Throughout the year we have author visits and lots of activities to promote a love of reading and celebrate books! Our library is well stocked and all children are given the opportunity to listen to a range of stories and texts being on a regular basis.
We also have a Book Vending Machine! Children can receive golden coins to select their very own book prize. As well as our vending maching, we have Bedtome Story Boxes. These special boxes go home with one child from each class every weekend so they can enjoy a story with family members and have a hot chocolate too!
