Welcome to Year One! 

In Year One the class teacher is Miss Thain. Working alongside Miss Thain is Mrs Townsend.

Curriculum

In Year 1, children will be building on the skills implemented in Reception. During our English lessons we will be exploring a range of texts through the Literacy Tree scheme and using these to write letters, diary entries, stories, leaflets and more! In our Maths lessons children will be strengthening their knowledge of number, shape, measurement, time and money using a variety of resources to support their learning. Using the Developing Experts scheme children will learn about Science and Geography, broadening their understanding of our world. In Science we will cover plants, seasons, materials, animals and the human body. In Geography we will begin with our school and expand to the United Kingdom and finally our world. In History we will learn about flight over time, toys of the past and compare a Victorian and modern day seaside. Art, DT and PSHE will be taught through the Kapow scheme. In our Art and DT lessons children will design and make their own smoothies, explore wheels and structures and a variety of art styles, such as, sculptures, weaving and drawing using different materials. In PSHE children will learn about looking after and understanding themselves. In PE children will build on their gross motor skills across a range of sports, including gymnastics, dance, striking and filed games, yoga and athletics. In our RE lessons children will learn about Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism. 

Throughout the Year 1 curriculum the children will also learn through play in our continuous provision, this is changed to adapt with the topics the children are learning about. Children will also have the chance to go on trips, take part in a music festival and participate in school performances. 

Homework

Homework will be sent home on a Friday and will be expected to be returned the following Friday. This will include spellings of the Year 1 common exception words and a Maths worksheet relating to our current topic. 

Homework helps children by recapping learning that has taken place in the classroom. It is important that homework is completed every week. 

Reading

Reading is a priority at our school and we want our children and families to foster a love of reading. Each week your child will recieve a book that is linked to their phonics group, it is important that this book is read at least 3 times a week to build up speed, fluency and accuracy. 

During school the children will have lots of opportunities to explore texts outside of our English scheme. Every day the children will have some 'Reading for enjoyment time' after lunch and through Talk Through Stories will explore a new story, poem or non-fiction text each week. This focuses on comprehension skills and understanding vocabulary. 

Phonics Screening Check

Throughout the country, children in Year 1 will take part in a phonics screening check during the same week in June.

It is designed to assess whether each child has retained the appropriate phonics decoding and blending skills to an age-expected standard.
